Cloth Diapers for Overnight?

I know you may be thinking to yourself, “cloth diapers are ok for the daytime, but could never hold up overnight.” However, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy cloth diapering at night can be! The key to cloth diapering successfully through the night is all about absorbency. In general, AIO’s (All-In-One’s) are not going to get babies or toddlers through the night unless your child is not peeing much during the night. The type of material you are stuffing your diaper with will make all the difference. When considering what to use as an insert, keep in mind that hemp is far more absorbent than microfiber. In fact, I have not met any babies or toddlers who can make it through the night with only 1 microfiber insert. A combination of the 2 materials is great as you will see below.

Check out a few of the great options for cloth diapering through the night.

1. Lollidoo Overnight Eco Pocket – this is my personal favorite overnight solution. Lollidoos are not only perfect for overnight, but the single most environmentally friendly diaper out there. They are made from recycled beverage bottles and most everything on them is recycled including the metal used in the snaps. Even better, each Lollidoo diaper is made by WAHM’s in the U.S. (eastern Washington, specifically). You have the choice of a stay dry layer next to the baby or an organic cotton layer next to the baby. This is a pocket diaper and you have the option of choosing to purchase a Lollidoo Eco Pocket with innies (their inserts) or purchase one of your own. I personally use an overnight Lollidoo Eco Pocket Diaper with a super-do insert on my super heavy wetter for 13 hours at night. We’ve never had a leak! Plus, Lollidoo Eco Pockets are a one size diaper!

2. Since the key to cloth diapering overnight is the absorbency, you can stuff any of your pocket diapers with a super-do insert. Super-do inserts are the #1 rated insert on Diaper Pin and amazing for absorbency. They have 6 layers of hemp terry covered with 2 layers of microfiber. The microfiber does a great job of absorbing liquid quickly and the hemp holds it for long periods of time. Super-do’s will fit in most pocket diapers.

3. If you are still having leaks with a super-do in a regular pocket diaper, try putting a diaper cover over the super-do stuffed pocket diaper. That will give you just enough of a boost in coverage to keep the diaper from getting clothes and sheets wet. You could also put a hemp stuffin underneath the super-do in the diaper for an extra boost of absorbency.

4. Do you have a ton of hemp or thick cotton prefolds left over from a previous diapering time? Try using your prefold in your pocket diaper! Need more absorbency than the one prefold? You can wrap a hemp stuffin in your prefold and use that as your pocket diaper insert.
As you can see, there are many great cloth diapering options for overnight. The level of absorbency you will need will depend on how heavy of a wetter your child is at night. Have questions? Please ask!

Cloth Diapering a Newborn

Really? Can you really successfully and easily cloth diaper a brand new newborn baby? You absolutely can and you have a number of different options.

1. This is the least expensive option: Prefolds and Diaper Covers. Prefolds are the diapers that most people think of when they conjure up images of the old style diapers. But thankfully, these prefolds are much better than the older style ones. You can get regular unbleached prefolds, or hemp/fleece prefolds or even 100% organic cotton prefolds. Plus, no more pins! All you need are these incredibly ingenious little devices called snappis! As for diaper covers, you have a lot of choices. I personally prefer either the Imse Vimse organic cotton diaper covers or the Thirsties Duo Wraps. You simply need to ensure that the umbilical cord is not being rubbed by the prefold. You can fasten the prefold under the umbilical cord while the umbilical stump is still there.

2. A little pricier, but a little more convenient: Fitted Diapers and Diaper Covers. Fitted diapers are a step up from prefolds in that they have a contoured shape and the closures are already attached (either via aplix or snaps). One of my personal favorite fitteds - Thirsties Fab Fitteds - luxuriously soft and wonderfully absorbant. Pair this with your favorite diaper cover and you are all set!

3. My personal newborn favorite - Rumparooz Lil Joeys! These will fit your baby the moment they are born. They have a snap down in the front to make plenty of room for the umbilical cord until it falls off. These are perfect for premies since they fit all the way down to a teeny, tiny 4lbs! They are an AIO (all in one) with internal gussets for containing the messiest messes. Rumparooz Lil Joeys are so easy, so cute and fit so well, they make me want to have another baby! The next batch of new products from the ABC show in vegas has arrived and I am SO excited!

First I'll go over the new and final version of the Fuzzi Bunz One Size diaper. Not only is this a great one size snap diaper, but it comes with an extra and easy to replace elastic. This diaper is really meant to last 3 or more years! I LOVE the adjustments on this because it gives you so much more flexibility than just 3 snap settings. Really love these diapers!

Next are the Kissaluvs Marvels One Size Fitted. I have never before felt anything quite as soft as the bamboo velour that is on the inside of the this fitted diaper! And the prints are so cute! I just let my little guy run around in one of these without a diaper cover. So breathable and unbelievably cute!

ABC Las Vegas show

As many of you know, I went to the ABC (All Babies and Children Show) in Las Vegas last week. Cloth diapers were a subset of this show and I was able to meet all the manufacturers I have been working with for years as well as pick up some fantastic new products. I was so excited to be able to be adding brand new products that I absolutely fell in love with. Many products I have tried out on my own kids and decided to add, but a few of the brand new items were simply too good to pass up. You'll see them soon . . .

What has been added so far:

Go GaGa Diaper Bags - hands down, my favorite diaper bag in the universe! I've been using mine for the past 2.5 years and absolutely LOVE it. It still looks much the same as it did when I bought it and it fits everything I need for cloth diapering not only 1, but 2 children in it!

Thirsties Fab Fitted Cloth Diapers - I have been using Thirsties products for over a year and really love them. The fab fitted diapers are wonderfully absorbent, ultra plush and quite trim. I think you'll love them too!

Thirsties Duo Wraps - a relatively new product, but I'm already in love! As you may have read in my last post about one size diapers, most of them don't fit starting at birth. Thirsties is the only diaper cover I have come across that has solved that problem by putting out TWO one size diapers. Yes, you need to buy 2 sizes of one size covers, but it saves you from buying THREE sizes otherwise: newborn, one size, toddler. These are sure to be a quick favorite of yours too!

One Size Diapers and the size of Your Baby

I often get asked, "which one size diaper is the best?"

My answer usually depends on their baby. Most cloth diapers fit each baby just a little differently. One size cloth diapers are no different.

So how do you decide? Here are a list of the one size diapers that I carry and how they fit skinny babies, average size babies and large babies/toddlers. These are my opinions (as opposed to the manufacturers) based on my experience with my own kids and the many children I have helped to put in cloth diapers over the past 4 years.

bumGenius One Size Diapers (both pocket and AIO): Tend to fit skinny babies and average size babies well. Tend not to fit larger babies and toddlers well. I find they stop fitting well around 30lbs. Start fitting well around 8-9 lbs. One of the most popular one size diapers out there. They fit trimly and are very easy to get on and off.

Happy Heinys One Size Cloth Diapers (both aplix and snaps): These fit the entire range really well. They start fitting well around 8-9lbs, but certainly fit babies and toddlers at the upper end of the weight range (35 lbs) and I've seen toddlers even a little bigger fit well into the Happy Heinys One Size diapers. If you have a very large baby or toddler, I suggest either going with the Happy Heinys or Knickernappies One Size.

Knickernappies One Size Diapers: These are another style of one size diaper that fits the whole range well. The major bonus with Knickernappies one size diapers are that they actually do fit up to 40lbs. By far, the longest fitting one size diaper.

Rocky Mountain One Size Diaper: These fit well on the smaller end of the range. Unlike other one size diaper though, these fit 7lbs very well. I find the Rocky Mountain One Size Diapers to fit very well on newborns (after the umbilical cord falls off).

Wahmies One Size Diapers: These tend to fit very true to their statement of starting to fit around 7lbs and up to close to 40lbs. As a bonus, they come in both the hook and loop closure and snaps.

Gro Baby One Size Diapers: Gro Baby diapers definitely fit the smaller range better. I find them to be just a little bulky on newborns, but still fit well. However, they don't fit the larger babies well. They seem to stop fitting well around the upper 20-lb range or 30lbs depending on the baby's build.

Mommy's Touch One Size Diapers: These fit best starting around 8-9lbs and fit well up to around 32 lbs.

Growing Greens One Size Fitted: These fit great on the medium and large settings with room to grow. Using only the smaller insert, I have had some blowouts, but they do ok.

Cloth Diapering with caretakers

One of our wonderful customers has a great system going for caretakers. Do you have a special system you have going with your cloth diapers? If so, just respond to this post and let me know! Below is Emily's experience:

I use the BumGenius all in ones and the BumGenius one size fits all. I was so excited when my little girl's preschool agreed to let her wear the all in ones at school. It was easy to convince them though, because it goes on just like a pampers and there are no difficult steps to tell them about. I just have them put the diaper in the wet bag that I bought from simplewondersdiapers.com and I take care of it later - works great! At night I use the BumGenius One Size because I like to be able to put extra stuffing in. I knew that different people would be putting her down for sleep since I am a working mom - so I color coded my daytime and nighttime needs. The untrained eye sometimes has difficulty telling the BumGenius all in ones from the BumGenius One Size, so I ordered all my one size in pink. Then I double stuff all my BumGenius One Size and I call them " nighttime diapers." That way whoever is putting my little girl down can be told to use pink diapers at night and other colors during the day. It has worked GREAT! I am expecting my second - a little boy - he was due yesterday! I am doing the same thing with his, except I am using Clementine for my nighttime color and Moonbeam, Ribbit, and White for daytime use. The other benefit of ordering some all in ones and some BumGenius One Size is that when the baby is really little you can use the one size and then when they get bigger you can use the BumGenius all in ones. We have had a great experience with the BumGenius and our "system" has worked really well!

Cloth Diapers slandered?

Apparently, cloth diapers are getting a little too popular for the makers of disposable diapers.

There is a bribed blogger initiative designed to promote disposable diapers through mommy bloggers coming directly from the disposable diaper companies. You can find a little of this in the Wall Street Journal in an article called "Big Diaper Makers Square Off" published on April 13, 2009. According to the article, the disposable diaper makers are concerned about new mom's wanting a less expensive alternative during this cash strapped time.
"Kimberly-Clark plans to ship free samples of its new diapers to about 500"mommy bloggers," hoping to build buzz among mothers who write aboutchild-rearing and their readers. Likewise, P&G is hosting about a dozenmommy bloggers at its Cincinnati headquarters next week to show how Pampersdiapers are developed."http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123957295459311805.html

NEW Rocky Mountain One Size Diapers

Rocky Mountain Diapers One Size Diapers. These are a new style of diaper with an internal snap adjustment system. I know the internal adjustment system looks a little intimidating, but it is actually very simple. You open the pocket part of the cloth diaper and pull on the elastic that you see running through the leg openings and snap into place. That's it! You don't need to undo them when you wash them and the best part about them is that they give the nice trim fit that a sized diaper offers.

I've become a big fan of these cloth diapers for a few reason: 1: I really like the suedecloth inners; 2: I LOVE the cute contrasting colors that Rocky Mountain Diapers come in; 3: I like the durability of the snaps and the general ease of use.

Who is behind Simple Wonders Diapers?

That would be me, Sultana Shah Jefts. I'm 31 years old, happily married and have two wonderful and very busy children - Kiri (3) and Mikah (1). We currently reside in Chocowinity, North Carolina, but are working our hardest at getting back out to the Pacific Northwest. My husband, Eric, manages a 300-acre Catfish farm out here in eastern NC. He works for the only company in the country that raises "natural" (no organic certification for catfish as of yet) catfish. The catfish you buy in Whole Foods comes from this company.

I was raised just outside of Seattle, WA. and that is where we would love to raise our children as well. I moved to Olympia, WA (my most favorite place ever!) when I was 18 to attend The Evergreen State College where I received my Bachelors Degree in Biology/Ecology. I worked for the Forest Service for a year and then began pursuing my Masters Degree at the University of Maine. My mom and drove across country together to get me out to Maine - that was quite an adventure! As most moms do, she drove me a little nuts, but we had a great time. My favorite stop was Glacier National Park - the natural beauty there is unrivaled. We made a lot of stops in Iowa for my mom to take pictures of corn growing (still unsure as to why she was so fascinated with the corn) and stopped in Chicago to visit my sister and my nephew. Ten days after our departure we arrived in Maine. Surprisingly, I had never been there before. I accepted the graduate assistantship site unseen. I had a little culture shock, but moving there with an intact community (school) made it a lot easier. Believe it or not, the day after I arrived, I met my husband. He was working at the Environmental Chemistry Lab on campus. My advisor arranged for me to go on a hike in Acadia with some other graduate students and he was there helping them. It took me a while to get the nerve to ask him out, but I finally did and the rest is history! We were married about 6 weeks after I graduated with my Masters of Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences.

I always knew I wanted to be a mom. I've dreamed about it since I was a little girl. So after a year of being married, he gave me baby socks as a Christmas present as his way of telling me he was ready to start trying to conceive. It took about 6 months to get pregnant, but we did and 39 weeks later our daughter, Kiri (5/5/05) entered the world. Luckily or unluckily, Harvard had decided to lay me off the week after finding out I was pregnant. So unemployed and with a newborn at home, I decided I needed to find an avenue to supplement my husband's income so that I could continue to stay at home with our daughter. And Simple Wonders Diapers was born

Choosing to start a cloth diaper business rather than any other type of business was a no brainer for me. I had used prefolds with pins on countless children I have taken care of through the years. When I found all the new styles of cloth diapers, I knew that was what I wanted to help other people find. However, like many people who start businesses without much of a business background, I didn't think it would be as difficult as it has been to get off the ground. It has been about 3 years now and I'm finally where I thought I would be after only a few months, not a few years! But I love it!

In my "spare" time (what's that?), I love spending time outdoors. We have a great organic garden and currently have our fall crops in - brussell sprouts, spinach, cabbage, broccoli. I spend a lot of time taking walks with my kids and discussing the environment around us with my daughter. If you see a notice on my cloth diaper site that we are on vacation, we have gone back home to Seattle to visit my mom.

I work a lot, likely too much. . . but I really love helping people find the right diapers for their family. If you have any questions about diapers, night time diapering or anything else diaper related, ask away!

The bamboo fitted diapers are finally in! These are so soft and the fit is really amazing. My theory on why they fit so trimly is because they are an 80/20 bamboo/polyester blend making them stretchy enough so that fit perfectly. I am becoming a bigger fan of fitted diapers as each day goes by!

I'm so excited that we have expanded into the world of baby carriers! I decided to start out with the most adjustable of all the baby carriers - the moby wrap. I love this carrier because it can be worn on the front, side or back and adjusts to EVERY size of person. It will fit whether you are a size 0 (I can't believe that is a size!) or a size 30. It will fit every shape of body as well because it is a large wrap that does not have buckles, rings or any other form that limits adjustments. One of my favorite aspects of the moby wrap is that you can easily have lots of skin-to-skin contact because the moby wrap has enough material to snugly wrap your newborn right up next to you but not reveal much of your torso in the process. What could be better than that during those first few weeks postpartum? I also love that Moby has the "mini moby wrap" for kids. My 3-year old daughter was beyond thrilled when I gave her one to carry her babies in. Every single time we go for a walk now, she needs to carry her baby in the same position that I am carrying her little brother. It is really too cute!

How much money will you save with cloth diapers?

One of the questions I get asked a lot is about the financial savings. Who can blame you? Our economy is in the toilet and all of us need to save money where we can. Luckily, you can easily save A LOT of money using cloth diapers. Just how much, you may ask? Consider this scenario:

My local supermarket carries an 88-count of Huggies for $26.99. This means you paying $0.31 per diaper. Keep in mind that you are throwing this away afterwards.

If you average about 10 diaper changes a day (more in the newborn stage and less in the toddler stage) and you child potty trains around 2.5 years old, you are spending an astonishing $2828.75 just on diapers PER child! What if they don't potty train until 3.5? Then you are spending $3960.25 on diapers. Then you factor in pull-ups which are outrageously expensive and it is even more!

Now lets consider cloth diapers:
Say you would like the least expensive option possible. This is definitely prefolds, snappis and covers.

You'll need 2 dozen prefolds in newborn and 2 dozen in premium (to fit toddlers) - $120 total.
8 Snappis totalling $2.49*8=$19.92
12 Diaper Covers with 4 in small, 4 in medium and 4 in large. Let's consider the Imse Vimse Organic Diaper Covers for this example. $14.60*12=$175.20
ALL of this totals $315.12

Compare this to the above figure of $2828.75. What would you do with an extra $2513.63? Perhaps put it in a college savings fund (you know you'll need it!)? Or maybe go on your first family vacation? Either way, the money will be better spent than on something you will throw in the garbage.

Let's consider another scenario. Perhaps you are looking for an easier diapering system than prefolds.

Consider a 24-pack of Happy Heinys One Size Diapers fitting babies from 8-35 pounds. A 24-pack would cost $430.80!
Perhaps you like the look of the BumGenius One Size Diapers better? A 24-pack would run you a little less at $406.80!!

Any way you look at the numbers, cloth diapering is so much better on your wallet! And when you factor in any subsequent children and the additional savings - it is a no-brainer!

Which cloth diaper is the best?

I think this is probably the most common question I get asked. I wish it were a simple "x is the best" type of answer, but like everything else in life, it isn't that simple.

The "best" style of diaper really depends on your baby and your families' needs. Are you looking at the bottom line? Then you will likely want to go with prefolds, snappis and diaper covers. If you are looking for something just a bit more convenient, you could use fitted diapers with diaper covers. Fitted diapers are a bit more absorbent and easier to use than prefolds but are more expensive. You could make that choice more economical by using the Growing Green One Size Fitted diapers (coming next week). I have to admit that I have never been a big fitted diaper fan past the newborn stage, UNTIL I tried these fitted diapers. I LOVE them! They fit well, are easy to put on and take off, come in either a cotton/hemp mix or 100% organic cotton. Pair them with an Imse Vimse diaper cover and you can't beat them!

Perhaps you are looking for hands-down, the easiest system out there. If that is what you are after, go with the all-in-one diaper. Cloth diapering truly does not get any easier than this. If you can put a paper diaper on a baby, then you can put an AIO on a baby. The all-in-one diapers have the absorbent insert built into the waterproof outer shell. You fasten them with a hook and loop closure (like velcro), take them off and put them in the diaper pail.

There is also the one size diaper option. One size cloth diapers are diapers that grow with your baby. They generally have a series of snaps in the front of the diaper for you to adjust as your child grows. The main advantage to these diapers is obvious - they grow with your baby so you don't need to buy different sized diapers as your child grows. However, there is a disadvantage. Since your baby is using them for such a long period of time (every day from birth to potty learning), many of them will likely need to be replaced if you have subsequent children. Having said that, spending just $400-500 on one size diapers for one child is pretty amazing compared with ~$3000 or more with paper diapers!

Many of the one size diapers are pocket diapers. Pocket diapers have a waterproof outer shell sewn to a fleece layer creating a "pocket" where you stuff the absorbency. The main advantage of pocket diapers is that the fleece wicks the moisture away from your baby so that the wetness is held in insert. This greatly helps your child to not ever feel wet. This also means that you can customize the absorbency. Say you have a super heavy wetter - you can stuff the pocket with a super-do insert. Or perhaps your child is a relatively light wetter - just use a microfiber insert. The adjustability is great and if you stuff them when they come out of the dryer, they are just as easy as an AIO!
